Money management tips by Vyasa Maharshi.
Introduction:
When you see people, you understand that
everyone is working hard in order to earn money, isn't it?
In what way should the earned money be
spent.
For this, a detailed budget plan is given
in the 8th canto of Bhagavatam.
It is an amazing budget.
Slokam:
"Dharmaaya Yashase Arthaaya Bhogaaya Svajanaaya cha
Panchadhaa Vibhajan Vittam Ihaamutra cha
Modate"
Divide and spend them in the following manner.
The lives of those who spend money in the way, which we will learn now are very
balanced. Similarly, their lives go smoothly without any financial ups and downs.
We can also understand that those who have
financial ups and downs are those who do not spend money in a balanced way.
5 ways to spend the Money
01. To Dharma
02. To Yashassu
03. To Artham
0 04. To Bhogam
05. To Svajanas
01. The very first 20% part should be used for Dharma:
Here, we should note the word "Dharma"
very carefully. It is not Daanam.
Dharmam means duty/responsibility.
Ex: If we see, in the creation there are animals, monks, people who do
sacrifices, etc.., there are monasteries like Kanchi mattam, Sringeri Mattam, etc.
Now spending 1/5th amount of our earned
money for them is our Dharmam.
These people never ask anyone for money. So
we have to go to them and rightly give the first part of our money to them. This is
called our Dharmam.
But here, our elders have placed one
condition, which is "we have to give to these charities privately". These
should never be done publicly or for publicity to show off to our friends and
others. Because this is not Daanam. This is Dharmam.
Dharmam should always be done privately as
per Shastras.
"How do we remember that we have to
spend money on people who never ask?" Yes, for that purpose God has
put a representative for that.
Whenever any mendicant visits you, they
would never ask "Sir, please do some Daanam." They ask "sir,
please do Dharmam."
If you observe, you will understand that
it's a peculiar word. God reminds you through them that you have a
responsibility of spending 20% of your money on Dharmam.
So, God reminds us through those mendicants
whether we have used it properly. When they ask, please definitely give them
money if they are really beggars.
If you observe beggars, you will understand
if they can or cannot earn money without begging. Help them accordingly.
Similarly, spend that money on this kind
of pious activity. See God in the receiver while giving charity, but never do
it for publicity.
This is about first 20%
02. Spend the next 20% of your money for Yashassu:
Spending for Yashassu is also similar to Daanam (charity) but you can use it for earning fame.
Ex: - If you donated some packs during Corona time, you can do it for
publicity. You can even share with people like friends etc. on your phone too. Like
this your name and fame increase.
You can spend money on Orphanages,
temples, Free food, etc.. And your name also will be mentioned on boards. Even
Shastras accepted this.
But if you observe, many people are
interested in charities of the second category (for fame) but not in the first category
(confidentially).
But, the two categories are equally
important. Be it a rich man or a poor man, 40% of their earnings should be
spent on the two.
If you do like this, whatever money you are
earning will come useful to you in your next life.
There are people who earn millions. But
when they die, children throw them away.
So the only way to get the money that we
earned in this life back to us in our next life is through Danam (Charity).
There is no other way.
We should understand that whoever is
leading a comfortable life in the present life must have done charities to the
needful in their previous life.
That's why, please spend this 40% in that
way.
If you did not properly use 40% of your money
for charity, then in the next life you will definitely be born in poverty.
At that time, you won't have money to do
charity even if you want to do it.
Now you might wonder "if you spend 40%
like this on charities, then what about ourselves? The last and next 60% is for ourselves.
Let us now see what they are.
03. The third part should be
used for Artham:
Artham means money. So you might wonder
what it means by "spending for Artham"?
This means you can spend money in a way that again brings you money. You can
buy houses, and lands, use them in fixed deposits, stock markets, etc.
Like this, you can use money in a way that
brings you back the money. Similar to savings.
So Vyasa Maharishi gave a 20% budget for savings.
But remember one thing. We should never go
to extremities in savings.
We have to use our earnings as mentioned
earlier (in charities) and also some portion for our family. But if you go for
extreme savings, then life will again go off track. We see many examples of
such lives.
04. The next 20% is for Bhogam:
This is
something which most of us like to do. Bhogam means
Spending for our pleasures. For this, you
can spend 20% of your money without any worries.
One great personality has given an amazing
definition for "How much should we enjoy Bhogam?"
He said, "Your Bhogam should always be
like your foot slipper."
You might wonder what it means by
"foot slipper". But you can understand by giving it a little thought.
Suppose you brought an amazing shoe from Woodlands or Adidas.
Suppose if the slipper is either larger or
shorter than your foot then you won't be able to walk regardless of how great
the brand is.
You could only walk when it rightly fits
your foot.
Similarly, this great personality said that
your Bhogam should also be as much required as you rightly fit foot slipper.
This is very important to learn.
This is called Bhoga lalasatvam (greed for
pleasures). Never fall into that situation. In case you fall, Goddess Lakshmi
will definitely get displeased.
When that happens you will definitely
suffer. So never use the money for unnecessary things.
Where it is necessary you are free to spend
and enjoy. But remember to never use it for unnecessary things.
05. The last 20% should be spent on Svajanas:
Svajanas means those who are under your shelter like family members and workers. You should spend for them but never cheat them.
Suppose you are an employer under whom
100 people are working, you should pay them without cheating. If you cheat them
then one day you will definitely fall down to the lowest regardless of you
being a millionaire.
Few employers are over-smart that they join
one new employee at the start of a month.
And they would pay him one month's salary
during the mid of next month instead of at the start.
Meaning they would always keep 15 days
salary with them and when the employee leaves the organization they would keep just
his 15 days' salary with them.
There are many organizations that cheat
people like this.
They could be entrepreneurs in this life
because of charities they did in their previous lives. But if they cheat now,
it would cause misery to them and their families. So never do that.
Servants in your house, milk men, newspaper
men, etc.. Do not cheat them. They are your svajanas.
You have to behave properly with Svajanas.
And this last 20% is for that reason. If you are not able to live like this,
then you would see financial ups and downs in your life.
If you are able to live as per this budget,
your life will go financially very smoothly.
Thank
you for Reading.
